Eating up Waste, Having Fun, and Taking Climate Action!

Have you heard of a Food Club before? If not, let’s dive in! Food Clubs are a fantastic way to bring people together, fostering learning, cooking, and a shared enthusiasm for food and sustainability.

For the past year, we have been running a Zero Waste Food Club in Barton-Upon-Humber, and it’s become a cherished monthly occasion. This pop-up family-friendly event provides a welcoming space for communities to come together to enjoy making and eating delicious good food, and pick up some valuable skills. Our collective mission is to take surplus ingredients and transform them into mouth watering dishes, all while taking steps to combat food waste.

Did you know that a staggering 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted worldwide each year? This isn’t just a waste of valuable resources; it also contributes significantly to the greenhouse gases responsible for climate change. In the UK alone, a jaw-dropping 6.6 million tons of food are wasted annually, with nearly three-quarters of it being perfectly edible!

Our food choices too wield an influence on climate change. By embracing a diet rich in plant-based, locally sourced, and sustainable foods, we have the power to substantially reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to a healthier planet.

Food Clubs are an integral part of our Zero Waste Food Hub, kindly supported by Hubbub and Starbucks. This project is broadening the horizons of our pop-up Community Fridges, encouraging community participation, supporting food-related skills, and providing opportunities to learn about sustainable, affordable, and nutritious eating. We’re hosting food clubs, delivering talks and demos on sustainable eating, curating a community cookbook, and creating a wealth of online resources for you to explore.

To celebrate the launch of this initiative, we invite you to our Pumpkin-themed Supper Club on November 4th at the wonderful Moon Coffee House in Scunthorpe. This scrumptious evening will shine a spotlight on the incredible potential of surplus pumpkins as the star ingredient in our vegan dishes. What’s more, any proceeds will be channelled into “paying it forward,” ensuring the continued success of our food clubs, community fridges, and other community food hub activities.
